Owens Found Guilty of Attempted First-Degree Murder

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Devraughne Terrell Owens, 27, of Jacksonville, was found guilty by a jury of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Owens now faces a maximum of Life in Florida State Prison with a 25-year minimum mandatory. A sentencing hearing is scheduled before the Honorable Waddell A. Wallace on Dec. 4, 2017.

On Feb. 27, 2015, officers were eating at a fast-food restaurant on Edgewood Avenue when they heard gunfire. Citizens in the surrounding area also called 911 to report a man in a traffic vest running through the neighborhood shooting a large black gun. One officer observed Owens wearing a yellow traffic vest with a large black gun and a silver revolver chasing a man into a backyard. Owens proceeded to shoot the victim multiple times as he lay on the ground. Owens then led officers on a foot chase through the surrounding neighborhood. During the chase, Owens discarded his 9mm Masterpiece Arms with a suppressor and extended magazine. He proceeded to hop fences and also discarded a silver .357 Magnum next to yellow traffic vest he was wearing. He was taken into custody on scene. A homemade rap music video was later discovered starring Owens and the two firearms he used during the shooting.

The case was investigated by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and was successfully prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Lauren Marie Huish and Chyna-Michele Makarowski.
