In partnership with the Clerk of Courts, judiciary, and law enforcement, the State Attorney’s Office is proud to announce the creation of “KEYS 2 Drive” — a diversion program that provides a streamlined, feasible opportunity for certain traffic offenders to obtain a valid driver’s license.
A valid driver’s license can help break what is often a vicious cycle of suspensions, fines, fees, and repeated license-related infractions for individuals. A driver’s license also has the ability to put them on the path to greater personal and economic success.
“For nearly a year, our office has worked with stakeholders to develop what we believe will be a solution to an ongoing problem for many in our community,” said State Attorney Melissa Nelson. “In a city as large as Jacksonville, a driver’s license can be an essential tool for greater prosperity. The KEYS 2 Drive program will put people back on the road legally and safely, all while reducing recidivism.”
The program is available to individuals whose primary offense includes Driving While License Suspended or Revoked (Section 322.34, Florida Statute) and No Valid Driver’s License (Section 322.03, Florida Statute).
“Some people just need a helping hand to pull themselves out of the vortex of suspended licenses. KEYS 2 Drive is that lifeline,” said Circuit Judge Linda McCallum, who helped spearhead the initiative. “This program provides participants an opportunity to meet their financial obligations and reduces the costs on the criminal justice system.”
KEYS 2 Drive is currently available in Duval County.
The Duval County Clerk of Courts has partnered with the office to provide financial payment plans and accommodations for eligible participants.
“The Duval Clerk’s Office is proud to work with its partner agencies on this important initiative for our community,” Clerk Ronnie Fussell said. “We look forward to the success of the KEYS 2 Drive program and applaud the hard work of all involved.”
In addition, the program is a benefit to public safety and the criminal justice system as a whole, and has the support of law enforcement.
“The KEYS 2 Drive program offers an alternative to a sentence of jail time for non-violent offenders, but more importantly, allows program participants an avenue to get back on the right path — without a criminal record, keeping their jobs and their families intact. This is a WIN for everyone involved,” said Sheriff Mike Williams.
