State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Jason Steven Evans, of Middleburg, was found guilty by a jury of Sexual Battery on a Child Less than 12 Years of Age, Tampering with a Victim in a Capital Proceeding, and Lewd or Lascivious Conduct. Evans now faces a mandatory life sentence in Florida State Prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled before the Honorable Don Lester on Nov. 6, 2019.

In January 2017, Evans had sex with and impregnated an 11-year-old child. A DNA test confirmed paternity and Evans was arrested. He claimed that the sex was consensual. While incarcerated, Evans contacted the minor victim, attempted to get her to change her statement to get him released from jail, and engaged in sexual conversations with her.

The case was investigated by Clay County Sheriff’s Office and is being prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Elizabeth White and Ashley Terry.
