Williams Convicted of Attempted Second-Degree Murder in 2017 Shooting

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Jamal Williams, of Jacksonville, was found guilty by a jury of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Shooting a Deadly Missile, and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon. Williams now faces a maximum of 30 years in Florida State Prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled before the Honorable Angela M. Cox on Feb. 19, 2019.

On Aug. 12, 2017, Williams exited a vehicle and approached the side of a local restaurant in Northwest Jacksonville. He then opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun through the restaurant window at Lindsey Tompkins, the father of his sister’s children who had previously insulted a rap video Williams made. Williams fired seven shots at Tompkins, who was able to escape unharmed to a back room. A witness in the restaurant saw the crime and was also able to identify Williams, a convicted felon, as the shooter. Williams was later arrested and confessed to shooting at Tompkins to try and scare him.

The case was investigated by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and is being prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys William Grauel and Lidija Barauskas.
