Nelson Names Nicholas May as Victim Services Director

In a move that will improve the State Attorney’s Office service to crime victims, State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces Nicholas May as the office’s first Victim Services Director.

In this role, May will oversee all victim services the office provides, including serving as liaison between victims and prosecutors; performing community service to enhance community knowledge about victims’ rights; assisting victims in completing satisfaction surveys; and supervising and training staff who work with victims. May will also oversee a comprehensive initiative to expand services, which will include the launch of a Victim Satisfaction Program that uses feedback and data to make improvements.

“Crime victims do not ask for that label,” said State Attorney Melissa Nelson. “One of our most important functions is to help them through what is a foreign process in a compassionate, dignified, and holistic way —in this role, Nicholas will help us better achieve just that.”

May joined the Fourth Circuit State Attorney’s Office in January 2020 as a restorative justice specialist. Since joining, he helped develop a restorative justice diversion program for qualifying juveniles and provided support for attorneys and other victims specialists in that area. He also served as a victim specialist for the State Attorney’s Office in Florida’s Eighth Judicial Circuit for four years.

May’s new role is effective Oct. 1, 2021.
