State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Darrell Thompson, of Jacksonville, was found guilty by a jury of Attempted Second-Degree Murder and Battery (Domestic). Thompson now faces up to life in Florida State Prison as a Prison Releasee Reoffender. He will be sentenced by the Honorable Gilbert Feltel during a Dec. 2, 2021, hearing.

On March 3, 2019, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting incident at a Westside home. The male and female victim were in a relationship and went to the female victim’s home to go to bed after a night out. After they returned to the home, the female victim’s son, Thompson, burst through the bedroom door with a handgun with an extended magazine and confronted the male victim for perceived slander in the community. Thompson shot the victim once before his gun jammed. The female victim pushed Thompson out of the room and the male victim locked the door. Before Thompson could return with another firearm, the male victim fled the residence through a window, hid in a nearby tree line, and called police. When officers arrived, the male victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The male victim said he had not had issues with Thompson prior to this incident. Thompson was arrested and told officers he shot the male victim. Further investigation resulted in the recovery of the shell casing inside the home along with two handguns.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Trey Atkinson and Christina Stifler.
