Speckman Found Guilty of Attempted Murder, Sentenced to 25 Years

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Brian Speckman was found guilty by a jury of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Shooting or Throwing Deadly Missiles, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The Honorable Jeb Branham sentenced Speckman to 25 years in Florida State Prison during a July 6, 2022, hearing.

Just after 1 a.m. May 31, 2020, members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were called to an East Arlington home in reference to a shooting. Speckman had called 911 to say he had shot the victim. The investigation revealed that Speckman was friends with the homeowner and was staying with them at the house. At some point in the day, Speckman took a firearm without permission from the homeowner’s bedroom and went to sleep in a spare room. The victim — not the homeowner — was at the home doing laundry when they knocked on the spare bedroom door. Speckman responded by firing three shots through the closed door, striking the victim in the chest. Speckman then exited the room and jumped out of the window of another bedroom. He fired a couple of more shots before calling 911 to report the shooting. Speckman, a previously convicted felon, was unable to legally possess a firearm. He was arrested at the scene where the gun was recovered.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Brooke Gasson and Hobbs Crockett.
