State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Tavares Mincey guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder; Carjacking with a Firearm; and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. After the verdict, the Honorable Jonathan Sacks sentenced Mincey to life in prison as a classified Prison Release Reoffender.
On Oct. 15, 2020, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a hospital for a shooting victim. The victim was shot seven times in Northwest Jacksonville and a witness immediately took the victim to the hospital. The victim was sitting on the curb outside a store with her partner and children when she noticed a white truck speeding toward them. The truck drove past, did a U-turn, and stopped in front of her. Mincey – who was driving the truck – shot at the victim and sped off. Mincey wore a mask during the shooting, but the victim and witnesses could see his eyes and distinguishable tattoos on his face; they immediately recognized him from two previous run-ins. While the detectives were on the scene of the shooting, they were notified of a nearby carjacking. Further investigation revealed Mincey stole the truck at gunpoint from a separate victim off 14th Street West and Whitner Street. Mincey drove that truck to Wilson Street where he shot the victim. Another witness came forward during the investigation and cooperated with law enforcement to record Mincey’s confession. Mincey is a previously convicted felon and is not legally allowed to possess a firearm.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Marcus Isom and Lee Wingard.
