State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found James Conyers guilty of Second-Degree Murder and Dealing in Stolen Property. With the verdict, Conyers faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Mark Borello will sentence Conyers at a later date.
On July 24, 2023, law enforcement was called to a St. Nicholas apartment complex after a man was found dead in his bathroom from a gunshot wound to his head. Friends of the victim told police that the victim’s neighbor, identified as Conyers, had recently threatened him. Witnesses said the victim told them someone had broken into his home and taken his Xbox. After the break-in, the victim bought another Xbox. Police found the victim’s new Xbox was also missing.
The day before the victim was found dead, Conyers’ girlfriend called the police to report her car and firearm missing and she believed Conyers took them; the two live together. After discovering the victim’s body, police contacted the girlfriend again. Conyers had returned to the apartment the night before and given her back her firearm. Police confiscated the gun, and it matched the fired cartridge case found at the scene of the murder. Digital records confirmed Conyers sold the victim’s Xboxes to a gaming business after he murdered the victim.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Brooke Milo and Loana Nardoni.
