State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Kalvin Gilbert Sr. guilty of Second-Degree Murder. With the verdict, Gilbert faces a 25-year minimum sentence up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Jeb Branham will sentence Gilbert at a later date.

On June 23, 2022, patrol officers responded to a shooting on East 26th Street where a victim was found dead inside a black-colored Chevrolet Impala. The victim had been shot multiple times. Immediately after hearing several gunshots, a witness reported seeing a white pickup truck speeding before it turned onto Franklin Street. Another witness saw the driver of the pickup truck pull alongside the black car that was parked on the side of 26th street. The witness then heard shots fired and a muzzle flash was seen coming from the pickup truck. The driver sped off. The investigation discovered Gilbert rented a white Dodge Ram truck on June 16 and returned it a day after the shooting on June 24, 2022. Forensic evidence confirmed Gilbert as the driver of the Dodge Ram truck at the time of the murder. Gilbert and the victim were relatives and had been in a feud in the months leading up to the murder.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Joseph Licandro and Elizabeth Brown.
