State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Zachary Shipmon guilty of three counts of Attempted Second-Degree Murders and two counts of Shooting or Throwing Deadly Missiles. With the verdict, Shipmon faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Shipmon at a later date.
On Feb. 5, 2023, Shipmon was riding in the driver’s side rear passenger seat of a black Kia Sorrento. The driver of the Kia Sorrento parked the car at a home off Green Forest Drive. The occupants were lying in wait for the victims to arrive across the street. When the victims’ cars pulled into the home, Shipmon and two other shooters fired fifty-six shots toward the victims, striking an occupied home and occupied vehicles. The shooting was captured on a surveillance camera, and during a police interview, Shipmon confirmed he was in the car. The driver sped away from the scene and crashed on an off-ramp of Interstate-295 and 103rd Street, and the four occupants — including Shipmon — ran. A police K9 apprehended Shipmon and he was arrested.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Leah Owens and Katherina Brown.
