State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Quamaine Smith guilty of Armed Robbery. With the verdict, Smith faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Anthony Salem will sentence Smith at a later date.

On Jan. 18, 2020, Smith and two others armed themselves with firearms and robbed the victim of their cell phone, jewelry, wallet, and clothing at an Old Kings Road apartment complex. The three got into a getaway car driven by another woman. Officers responded and saw them driving away from the scene. An officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped off leading police on a chase until the driver crashed on Powers Avenue. The four people in the car, including Smith, ran. Two women were taken into custody by officers, while two K9s located Smith and his co-defendant who were then taken into custody. The victim’s cell phone and other belongings were found on two of the co-defendants, and the victim’s identification was located inside the getaway car.

One of Smith’s co-defendants previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The remaining two co-defendants’ cases remain open.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Todd Conklin Jr. and Andrew Szatkowski.
