State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Ty’quez Cobb guilty of Armed Burglary; Aggravated Battery; two counts of Aggravated Assault; two counts of False Imprisonment; Kidnapping with a Firearm; Aggravated Fleeing or Eluding a Law Enforcement Officer; and Child Neglect. With the verdict, Cobb faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Mark Borello will sentence Cobb at a later date.
On Aug. 11, 2023, officers responded to Harts Road apartments for reports of an armed kidnapping. Earlier that evening, Cobb had threatened the victim that he was going to kick down her door. Later inside the home, Cobb pulled out a firearm and pistol-whipped the victim in the head and kicked her in the ribs and face. Cobb pointed his gun at a juvenile witness and demanded the witness clean up the blood. Cobb later drove off with the victim and their one-year-old baby, and a “BOLO” was issued. St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop on Cobb, who led them on a high-speed chase through St. Johns County at speeds up to 140 mph. The chase continued into Duval County and ended at Baymeadows Road and Southside Boulevard. Cobb ran but was quickly arrested. Both the victim and the child were taken to the hospital.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Leah Owens and Shaina Ruth.
