State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Robert Herring guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault. Herring pled guilty to Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon before trial. With the verdict, Herring faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Herring at a later date.

On May 29, 2023, a group of people were gathering on W 21st Street for a Memorial Day Celebration. Herring walked up to the party and asked for a plate of food. The victim told him he could join them, but he would need to pay $5 for the food. The victim and Herring have had previous run-ins in the past. Herring started cursing at the victim; he walked back to his car, grabbed a gun from inside his car, and left the area. Herring then returned and shot at the crowd from his vehicle. People scattered and hid from the gunfire. Herring drove past the victim and fired more rounds. He drove to a corner store across the way, got out of his car, and crossed the street to continue shooting before he got back into his car and drove away.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Jalisa Curtis-King and Dillon Rheuby.
