State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Justin Lloyd guilty of two counts of Driving Under the Influence Manslaughter and one count of Driving Under the Influence with Damage that killed Aubrey Miles Granberry and Mary Cynthia Wells. With the verdict, Lloyd faces up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Lindsay Tygart will sentence Lloyd at a later date.
Around 10 p.m. April 29, 2021, Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 346 for a fatal car crash. Lloyd’s vehicle had heavy front damage and the victims’ car had rear damage. The investigation concluded that Lloyd was speeding more than 100mph down I-10 when he slammed into the back of Wells and Granberry. Both cars overturned in the median. Due to the impact, Wells was ejected from the vehicle, and Granberry’s body was recovered from inside the vehicle. Both died on scene. The responding troopers and responders with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue reported seeing signs of impairment from Lloyd. Post-Miranda, Lloyd provided an interview on scene and the trooper could smell alcohol on his breath. Lloyd would not consent to give a sample of his blood; a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample from Lloyd to be tested for alcohol and drugs. His blood was drawn on scene. On June 4, 2021, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s report showed Lloyd had a 0.137 blood alcohol level.
The case was investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys John Kalinowski and Loana Nardoni.
