State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found George Oliver III guilty of Driving Under the Influence causing Serious Bodily Injury. With the verdict, Oliver faces upwards of five years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Anthony Salem will sentence Oliver at a later date.
Around 3 a.m. June 9, 2024, officers responded to a crash on Atlantic Boulevard where Oliver – the driver – hit a pedestrian in a parking lot. Oliver was speeding through the parking lot when he ran into the victim walking and sent the victim through a nearby business window. The victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Officers conducted a DUI investigation on scene; they noticed Oliver had to lean on items to stay balanced, had glassy eyes, and had a mild odor of alcohol on him. Oliver told the officers he left the Jacksonville Beach bars after having a few drinks. The officer conducted field sobriety tests, which Oliver failed. He was taken to Duval County Jail where he was given a breath test; his blood alcohol level was 0.092.
The case was investigated by the Atlantic Beach Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Andrew Szatkowski and Todd Conklin Jr.
