State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Demetricia Stills guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. With the verdict, Stills faces up to life in Florida State Prison with a mandatory minimum of 25 years. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Stills at a later date.

On Jan. 15, 2024, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a person shot at a home on East 32nd Street. The victim had a bullet wound to his leg and was taken to the hospital where he was interviewed by officers. The victim was at his sister’s house when he was shot; he said his sister and Stills — her ex-boyfriend — had a fight earlier in the day and Stills left. While talking outside with his sister later in the day, Stills returned. The victim stepped off the porch to tell Stills he could not show up unannounced, when Stills pointed a firearm at his sister. He jumped in front of his sister and Stills fired a shot. Stills was arrested at his home and officers seized two firearms. Stills is a previously convicted felon and is not legally allowed to possess a firearm.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Jalisa Curtis and Brittany Johnson.
