State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Charles Cawthorn guilty of Burglary to a Dwelling. With the verdict, Cawthorn faces up to five years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Mark Borello will sentence Cawthorn at a later date.

On July 23, 2025, police responded to the Queen’s Harbour neighborhood in the Intracoastal West area of Jacksonville in reference to a burglary. The caller said someone was in her son’s home trying to steal items. When police arrived, they found Cawthorn crawling in the woods behind the house to avoid detection. The home’s owner was incapacitated, so his mother was checking on the house — when she arrived, the air conditioner was turned down and TV was on in a bedroom, which showed signs of someone who stayed there. The homeowner’s high-end clothing, shoes, and other items were in trash bags that Cawthorn had placed near a doorway. Cawthorn admitted he climbed over a fence in a wooded area to enter the gated neighborhood; he did so because he heard the homeowner was incapacitated and he wanted to gather his belongings. The homeowner, however, said Cawthorn should not have been in his house and that he had not given him permission to be there.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Andrew Szatkowski and Fallon Hinkley.
