State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Isaiah Hawkins guilty of Second-Degree Murder. With the verdict, Walker faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Jonathan Sacks will sentence Hawkins at a later date.
On May 4, 2024, officers responded to a gas station on Roosevelt Boulevard for a deceased woman with multiple gunshot wounds, lying face down between her car and the gas pump. Witness testimony and surveillance video footage showed Hawkins and the woman arrive together in the vehicle. Hawkins was in the passenger seat, and the woman was in the driver’s seat. During a verbal altercation, Hawkins shot the woman in the stomach and in the back. He climbed out of the driver’s side of the vehicle, stood over her, and walked away.
Two spent shell casings and Hawkins’ DNA were located inside the vehicle. A download of Hawkins cellphone included a text message in which he criticized a news article about the woman’s death, stating that the article had his description wrong and that he had gotten rid of the firearm used in the murder. The investigation included eyewitness identification, DNA, and location data.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Chyna Makarowski and Shaina Ruth.
