State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Clay County jury found Kiaun Miller guilty of Second-Degree Murder. With the verdict, Miller faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Don Lester will sentence Miller at a later date.
The victim and Miller share a son. In December 2020, the victim and their 2-year-old son moved into an apartment with Miller and his current girlfriend in Orange Park. On Dec. 21, 2020, Miller and the victim took what was supposed to be a day trip to Orlando, but that evening Miller returned to the apartment without the victim. Four days later, the victim returned to the apartment to get her son. An argument ensued that became physical. During that time, Miller retrieved a handgun and pointed it at the victim as she held their son and told her that she was not taking their child. As she walked out, he followed her — still with the gun — and took the son from her and went back inside the apartment. The victim returned inside to retrieve the child and another argument ensued with the victim slapping Miller. He then shot her three times, despite the fact she had no weapon. The victim died at the scene.
The case was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Ashley Terry and Cara Devlin.
