State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Calvin Mapson was found guilty by a jury of Manslaughter with a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile Delinquent Found to have Committed a Felony Act. With the verdict, Mapson faces up to 30 years Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Mapson at a later date.

Just before 1 a.m. Jan. 17, 2025, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called to a Sunbeam Road gas station in reference to a person shot. After a night of celebrating his birthday, the victim stopped at a Sunbeam Road gas station. Surveillance footage from the business showed the victim enter and exit the building. When he is standing outside, Mapson and two other men enter the store and steal some items. During this time, Mapson pulls down his mask and reveals a heart-shaped tattoo on his cheek and his blue-and-white Nike slides. When they leave the store, the victim and the men get into an argument in the parking lot. Mapson pulls out a gun and shoots five times. The video shows the victim fall to the ground and Mapson and another man running away. The victim was transported to the hospital but died from his injuries. The investigation included incriminating social media posts, witness statements, and physical evidence that led to Mapson being the shooter. Mapson was also wearing the same Nike slides when he was arrested months later.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Erin Wolfson and Katherina Brown.
