State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Reginald Monroe guilty of two counts of Attempted Second-Degree Murder; one count of Shooting or Throwing Deadly Missiles; and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. With the verdict, Monroe faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Meredith Charbula will sentence Monroe at a later date.
Monroe and the victim were previously in a relationship, but they were going through a contentious breakup Nov. 2, 2021, when Monroe drove by her apartment. Monroe saw his ex in a car with another man. Monroe then drove around the corner, parked his car, and waited at the bus stop at the entrance of the apartment complex until she drove past. As soon as he saw her car, Monroe ran toward it yelling obscenities and threats while holding a gun. She sped away as Monroe fired a shot at the car with his ex and the man inside. The bullet shattered the rear passenger side window and lodged into the back seat. ShotSpotter notified the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office of a single shot fired. Responding officers located a shell casing in the roadway in front of the bus stop and video surveillance from a nearby business captured part of the incident. Detectives obtained phone records and cell-site location data that placed Monroe’s phone at the scene at the same time as the ShotSpotter activation.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Brittany Johnson and Susan Haag.
