State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Nicodemus Mugwe guilty of Unlawful Sexual Activity with Certain Minors. With the verdict, Mugwe faces up to 15 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Jeb Branham will sentence Mugwe at a later date.

On Dec. 26, 2021, the victim and her mother were staying at Mugwe’s house. Mugwe was in a relationship with the victim’s mother. Mugwe offered the victim his guest bedroom to sleep in and, while the victim was asleep, Mugwe entered the room and told the victim to be quiet or she would be in trouble. Mugwe then sexually assaulted the victim. The next day, the victim reported the attack to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and immediately submitted to a sexual assault medical exam. Swabs from the exam were tested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Mugwe’s DNA was a match.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Terence Martin and Katherina Brown.
