State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Carla Hill guilty of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. With the verdict, Hill faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Hill at a later date.
At 8 p.m. June 16, 2024, members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to Grothe Street in reference to a person shot. When they arrived, the victim was found with a gunshot wound that shattered his leg. A witness told law enforcement Hill approached the victim and fired several gunshots at him as he hid behind a telephone pole. Hill left the scene on a bike. Another witness provided a similar narrative, and an additional person gave officers a note with Hill’s home address. The victim told police he was in front of a Grothe Street home where more than 30 people were hanging out, including Hill. He and Hill were talking when Hill became defensive, armed herself, and fired several shots as he hid. He was able to identify her from a photo.
Hill was arrested two days later. She was previously convicted of a felony and is not legally allowed to possess a firearm. Post-arrest, she admitted to being a convicted felon and admitted to shooting towards the victim.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Jalisa Curtis and Carleshia Jimerson.
