State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Demyya Thomas pleaded guilty to Manslaughter with a Weapon for the 2023 death of her husband, Reginald Curtis. Per terms of the negotiated plea agreement, Thomas was sentenced during the July 17, 2024, hearing to more than 10 years in Florida State Prison.

On the evening of Dec. 8, 2023, members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a Union Street apartment complex for reports of a person who had been stabbed. When they arrived, officers found Curtis deceased with a stab wound outside the apartment. The neighbor witnessed the attack and told officers that police were often called to the apartment for domestic issues. On this particular day, the neighbor heard arguing then saw Curtis at the front door throwing Thomas’ items in the front yard. Thomas then rushed at Curtis and appeared to push him. Thomas went upstairs with the neighbor and admitted she just stabbed him. The conversation was captured on a surveillance camera.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Annie Maguire.
