State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Daton Haggary guilty of two counts of First-Degree Murder for the deaths of Brian Gates and Shilea Curtis. With the verdict, Haggary faces a mandatory life sentence in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Jonathan Sacks will sentence Haggary at a later date.

On Aug. 1, 2024, Haggary flagged down officers on Cesery Boulevard. He told them he shot his roommate, Gates, and his roommate’s girlfriend, Curtis, and left the gun outside of their house. Officers responded to the home and found the gun outside on top of a car. Once they obtained a search warrant, officers went into the home and found Gates and Curtis inside with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced deceased on scene. Ten casings were recovered from the scene near their bodies. Haggary’s personal belongings, credit cards, and a lease agreement were found in the front bedroom, and Haggary’s fingerprint was on the gun.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Annie Maguire and Lauren Randall.
