State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Latorray Collins pleaded guilty to Attempted Manslaughter with a Firearm. Per the negotiated plea agreement, the Honorable London Kite sentenced Collins to 12 years in Florida State Prison on June 18, 2026.

On Feb. 22, 2025, Collins contacted her ex-boyfriend to have him pick up his belongings, and he told her he did not want the items back. That evening, the ex-boyfriend was with the victim and several others. The group stopped at a liquor store, then they left to go to a restaurant. The victim was riding in the ex-boyfriend’s passenger seat, while the rest of the group followed in another car. Collins saw her ex at the liquor store, followed him, and called his phone several times, all of which went unanswered. The ex-boyfriend noticed Collins following him and trying to stop him; he was able to drive around her. However, when he stopped at a red light, Collins got out of her car and banged on his car window, demanding to speak with him. The two got into a verbal fight and one of the victim’s friends got out of their car and threw a cup of alcohol at Collins. Collins took a gun out of her waistband and fired a shot she claimed was a warning shot. The single round struck the victim in the head. Collins called 911 and stayed on scene until officers arrived. The victim was unresponsive and was taken to the hospital; she survived but was left paralyzed because of her injuries.

The victim and her family were consulted throughout the course of the case and were in agreement with the negotiated plea.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Susan Haag.
