Jury Finds Nelson Guilty of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Corey Nelson guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder; Shooting or Throwing Deadly Missiles; Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon; Aggravated Assault; and Resisting an Officer Without Violence to His or Her Person. With the verdict, Nelson faces a minimum mandatory of 20 years with a maximum of up to 66 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Mark Borello will sentence Nelson at a later date.

On Jan. 25, 2026, Nelson and his girlfriend went to her ex-husband’s home. Nelson pointed a firearm at the ex-husband’s then girlfriend and threatened to shoot her. She ran inside and told the ex-husband who then came outside. Nelson fired multiple rounds towards the ex-husband and into the home. Nelson and his girlfriend then drove off from the scene. Shortly after, officers located Nelson, but when they pulled him over, Nelson ran. He was located by a K9 Officer hiding underneath a nearby home.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Loana Nardoni and Corie Powell.
