State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Shane Payne Jr. guilty of Home Invasion Robbery, and Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer. Following the verdict, Payne pleaded guilty to Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile Delinquent Found to Have Committed a Felony Act. With the verdict and plea, Payne faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Jonathan Sacks will sentence Payne at a later date.

On Nov. 30, 2023, The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a Westside home regarding an armed carjacking and home invasion. The victim of the carjacking told police he exited his car with a pizza when Payne — armed with a handgun and wearing a mask from a horror movie villain — and another man and told him to leave his keys in the car. Payne also robbed him of cash. Once inside, Payne and the other man demanded money from the victim. The victim’s girlfriend and young son were home at the time and witnessed the home invasion robbery. After taking the victim’s phone, Payne and the other man stole his car and drove away. The victim’s sister arrived and provided tracking information on her brother’s phone, which led police to the area where Payne and the man were. A police chase ensued until Payne crashed the car and fled on foot until he was caught with the assistance of a K-9 unit.

Payne also faces two counts of First-Degree Murder in a separate case involving the killing of his father and friend.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Trey Atkinson and Dan Skinner.
