State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that the Honorable Brooke Brady found Djuan Owens guilty of Aggravated Assault after a bench trial. With the verdict, Owens faces up to 5 years in Florida State Prison. Judge Brady will sentence Owens at a later date.

Around 5 p.m. Aug. 3, 2022, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a Northside home to respond to an armed suspicious person seen running from the area. Around the same time, 911 dispatch received a call for an armed robbery in the same neighborhood. The investigation revealed Owens was with a woman when they met up to purchase marijuana from the victim. Owens did not like the marijuana he bought. He left the area and then returned, pointed his gun at the victim, and demanded money from him.  The victim handed over cash. Officers patrolled the area and found Owens and the woman sitting in a car on Winthrop Street; they were taken into custody. Owen’s grandmother gave officers consent to search the car, and officers found the handgun and cash.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Jalisa Curtis and Carleshia Jimerson.
