State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found William Campbell guilty of First-Degree Murder and Attempted First-Degree Murder. With the verdict, Campbell faces a mandatory life sentence in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Anthony Salem will formally sentence Campbell at a later date.

On Sept. 5, 2022, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on West 27th Street and found two victims shot in the backyard. Both victims were taken to the hospital, and one later died from their injuries at the hospital. Surveillance video showed the victims parked across the street at an empty lot and walked behind the home. Moments later, multiple gunshots are heard on the video and a person is seen running down Silver Street. Surveillance video from earlier that morning showed Campbell, in the same clothes as the person running from the shooting, talking to one of the victims at a nearby gas station. Then, Campbell walked away from the gas station toward the victim’s house where the shooting later took place. Cell-site data for Campbell showed he was at the scene of the murder at the time of the murder. Officers arrested Campbell during a traffic stop and found a firearm on him, which was later tested and confirmed to be the same firearm used in the shooting.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Chyna-Michele Makarowski and Lauren Anderson.
