State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Derrick Simmons guilty of Armed Robbery. With the verdict, Simmons faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Simmons at a later date.

In the early morning hours of April 3, 2024, Simmons approached the victim and a witness who were leaving an ATM on North Main Street. Simmons stole the victim’s wallet and took out a knife. Simmons forced the victim to withdraw money from the ATM, and then ran from the scene. A witness on scene called the police and gave a description of Simmons and a woman he was with at the time of the armed robbery. An officer spotted Simmons and the woman walking on North Main Street approaching 8th Street. Officers searched Simmons and found the knife. The victim’s wallet was found behind a nearby apartment complex.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Carleshia Jimerson and Luke Dill.
