State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Clay County jury found Derek Fletcher guilty of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer; Driving Under the Influence; and Resisting an Officer Without Violence. With the verdict, Fletcher faces up to five years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable James Kallaher will sentence Fletcher at a later date.

In the early morning hours of July 25, 2024, a member of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office saw Fletcher driving a motorcycle at DeBarry and Bartlett Avenues with the taillight off. Fletcher turned and drove into the other lane and onto the grass. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but Fletcher looked back at the officer and continued to drive away. Eventually, Fletcher parked and began walking away. The officer ordered Fletcher to stop, which Fletcher ignored and instead cursed at the officer with slurred words. Eventually, Fletcher complied. While detained, Fletcher said he had been drinking that evening. Officers noticed several signs of impairment and, when taken into custody, Fletcher made threats against the arresting officer.

The case was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Richard Natto and Hector Murcia Bustos.
