State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Jaelin Leroy guilty of Manslaughter with a Firearm. With the verdict, Leroy faces up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Leroy at a later date.

On Saturday Oct. 28, 2023, the night of the Florida-Georgia football game, a crowd was in the Five Points neighborhood when a gunshot was heard. The crowd dispersed and officers with Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office immediately responded. Officers saw Leroy with a gun in hand, and he was detained for questioning. Investigation determined the victim was with a group of people and walking on Park Street. One member of the group turned back to speak with Leroy. The victim followed this individual —- a friend of the victim — as they individual spoke to Leroy. Witnesses then saw Leroy pull out a gun and shoot the victim. Leroy told police he felt threatened by the victim due to him victim having his hands in his pockets; and claimed the friend acted aggressively toward him.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Joe Licandro and Christina Stifler.
