State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Marlon Sago guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder in the 2021 shooting of a man on an Arlington roadway. With the verdict, Sago faces up to life in Florida State Prison, with a 25-year minimum mandatory. The Honorable Tatiana Salvador will sentence Sago at a later date.  

On Nov. 3, 2021, a male victim was shot while sitting in traffic at the Merrill Road and Interstate 295 interchange in Arlington. The victim chased after the shooter — later identified as Sago — and crashed his vehicle into the back of the shooter’s SUV to prevent him from speeding away. Sago left his car and ran west on Merrill Road toward a gas station. A witness on scene identified Sago as the shooter and multiple witnesses said he was wearing a red shirt and a hat.

The investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office revealed the SUV Sago drove was his ex-girlfriend’s. A search warrant on the car revealed multiple shell casings, a black gun holster, and a receipt for a Downtown fast-food restaurant. Surveillance from the restaurant matched the SUV driven by Sago along with the red shirt he wore. That red shirt and a hat were found near the gas station in the direction Sago ran — a 9 mm pistol was also found by the clothes in a retention pond. A DNA profile from the shirt and a straw on the fast-food cup from the SUV matched Sago, and digital evidence placed him at the shooting scene. The pistol found in the retention pond and casings found in the car were a match.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Elizabeth Brown and Rachel Allison.
