State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Brian Jones guilty of two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, two counts of Attempted Manslaughter Shooting or Throwing Deadly Missiles, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. With the verdict, Jones faces up to 60 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Jones at a later date.

On May 13, 2025, Jones brought his 3-year-old child for a routine custody swap at his mother’s house on Danville Avenue. When the mother arrived, she had her 15-year-old daughter and new boyfriend in her car. After the mother put their 3-year-old child in her car, Jones approached her car and asked about the man inside. Jones pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds at the car with four people — including his child — inside. The airbags deployed in the car and forced the 15-year-old to speed off to safety. On May 15, 2026, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s Community Problem Response Unit patrolled a motel seeking to serve Jones two arrest warrants and numerous active capiases. An officer saw Jones leave the motel. As marked patrol cars drove into the lot, Jones ran. A K-9 took Jones down and he was taken into custody.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Katherina Brown and Andrew Szatkowski.
