State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Eugene Anderson guilty of Manslaughter for the 2022 death of his wife. With the verdict, Anderson faces up to 15 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Jonathan Sacks will sentence Anderson at a later date.

On the afternoon of Nov. 25, 2022, Anderson called 911 to report his wife unresponsive. He claimed she jumped on him with a knife the night before, so he held her down until she fell asleep. Anderson said his wife wasn’t waking up. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded and pronounced his wife dead on scene. Family members said there was an argument during Thanksgiving dinner where the victim was trying to de-escalate Anderson. She took him home and returned to Thanksgiving dinner at his mother’s house. A search warrant was obtained, and detectives noticed the Ring doorbell camera had been removed from Anderson’s front door frame and was found wrapped in a towel in the trash. During the walkthrough, there was no evidence of a struggle. The autopsy of the victim contradicted Anderson’s story; her death was ruled a homicide with the cause of death mechanical asphyxiation by chest compression. A search warrant of Anderson’s phone showed he deleted nearly 100 text messages and phone calls between him and a woman he had an affair with during his marriage. The texts were sent and received before and after the victim’s death.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Donna Thurson and Katherina Brown.
