State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Santos Herring Jr. guilty of Second-Degree Murder. With the verdict, Herring faces up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Herring at a later date.

On May 18, 2024, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting at the Interstate 295 and Interstate 10 interchange. When they arrived, they found a male victim inside a blue sedan who suffered a single gunshot wound to his back. There were other bullet holes in the front driver’s door; the victim died from his injury. Police recovered his cellphone from the car. The victim’s girlfriend told police the victim told her during a call that a white sedan was chasing him. The investigation revealed the Herring and the victim knew each other through past business dealings and that Herring claimed the victim owed him $10,000. Digital evidence showed Herring demanded the money in a week and made numerous threats to the victim. Digital evidence also placed Herring for several hours at a gas station the victim was known to frequent and that Herring attempted to call and text him from that location in an attempt to meet. Herring was the driver of the white sedan, which belonged to his girlfriend.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Katherina Brown and Lauren Randall.
