JURY FINDS CAINE GUILTY OF ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF A FIREARM
State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Benjamin Caine guilty of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. With the verdict and enhancement as a Habitual Felony Offender, Caine faces up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Linda McCallum will sentence Caine at a later date.
On Sept. 28, 2023, Caine went to his girlfriend’s house on 7th Street in Jacksonville Beach after she had not answered his phone calls all day. Caine entered her home and got angry with her when he heard her on the phone with another man. Caine grabbed his items that were placed in a grocery store bag and headed toward the door to leave. Before he left, Caine turned around with a firearm in hand and pointed it at his girlfriend, threatening her. Caine left and she immediately called 911. Officers with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department located Caine a short distance away. Caine was detained while officers canvassed the area for his belongings and weapon. An officer found the grocery bag with Caine’s personal items, and a K9 officer found Caine’s firearm in a bush. Caine is a convicted felon and is not legally allowed to possess a firearm.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Beach Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Laura Hartung and Ju Young Jang.
