LEGGETT JR. PLEADS GUILTY TO TRAFFICKING DRUGS, OTHER CRIMES
State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces Tommy Leggett Jr. pleaded guilty during trial to Trafficking in Substituted Cathinones while Armed with a Firearm; Possession of More Than 20 Grams of Cannabis while Armed; Possession of a Controlled Substance Paraphernalia; and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Leggett faces a 10-year minimum mandatory sentence and up to life in Florida State Prison. The Honorable London Kite will sentence Leggett at a future hearing.
On Dec. 20, 2022, an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on an Uber driver who ran a stop sign at Mustang and Bonneval Roads. Leggett was in the backseat of the Uber with a backpack. After developing probable cause, officers searched the vehicle and found Leggett’s backpack. Inside Leggett’s backpack, officers found a loaded handgun, a white rock like substance which later tested positive for substituted cathinones, two baggies of marijuana, and a scale. The firearm was listed as stolen in the database. Leggett’s DNA was found on the magazine of the firearm. Leggett is a previously convicted felon and is not legally allowed to possess a firearm.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Brooke Milo and Shaina Ruth.
