MITCHELL FOUND GUILTY OF POSSESSION OF A FIREARM BY A CONVICTED FELON

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that a Duval County jury found Darrion Mitchell guilty of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. With the verdict and because he has been put on notice as a Habitual Offender, Mitchell is now facing up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Tatiana Salvador will sentence Mitchell at a future hearing.

On May 8, 2021, officers with Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were called to a hotel for a firearm theft. The victim met Mitchell at a club and the two spent the night together. The room was booked under Mitchell’s name. The victim said Mitchell left in the morning to get breakfast and never returned. When the victim looked through his belongings, his gun was missing. Video surveillance shows Mitchell leaving the room with a case under his arm. Officers registered the victim’s firearm as stolen. A few months later, in July 2021, police responded to a home in Jacksonville for a person shot. The victim was Mitchell, who told hospital staff his firearm went off while he was sleeping. Police ran the firearm through law enforcement databases, and it revealed the firearm was reported as stolen by the victim in May.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Christina Roldan and Kendall Briley.
