NASSAU COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO 45 YEARS FOR MURDER OF MITCHELL SMITH
State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that the Honorable James Daniel sentenced Micheal Scott Williams to 45 years in Florida State Prison for the murder of Mitchell Smith and other crimes. Williams pleaded guilty to Second-Degree Murder, Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Armed Burglary with Assault or Battery, and Tampering with Evidence during a Oct. 12, 2023, disposition hearing.
On Sept. 17, 2022, a group of people gathered at a home on Woodridge Drive in Callahan. During the small party, there was a dispute between Williams and others. Several people left the party, and the owner of the home asked Williams to also leave. Williams went back to his apartment with a witness and called the homeowners. The witness told officers with Nassau County Sheriff’s Office that Williams was threatening the homeowner over the phone. Williams went back to the home with a gun and shot the victim — Mitchell Smith —in the head, fired his weapon at another person, and punched the homeowner. There were several witnesses inside the home at the time of the shooting and assault. Williams left the home once again, but this time with his wife who was a witness to the crime. Williams disposed of his weapon and attempted to use bleach to get rid of any blood on him from the shooting.
The case was investigated by Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Chris Huband.
